I've been following Slovak politics only very superficially, but I was aware of Mr. Fico's position on the war in Ukraine, and recently, also the injections. Of course, this made him a top enemy for the democratic(TM) liberal(TM) forces, and so they vilified, vilified, and vilified. And it would seem that this old non-violent poet(*) took the message a tiny bit more seriously than intended, and oops. For what it's worth, I *think* the Slovak (and Czech) politicians are genuinely shocked, i.e. they aren't just faking it. They are probably thinking "Holy sh!t, this could have happened to me!"
(*) The shooter is 71 years old (as you noted), has published three(?) poem collections, a novel, and some other book, was for a while the head of some literary club, and apparently tried to found some sort of non-violence organization, but I don't know if that went anywhere. And then he figured he'd shoot Fico.
I think so, too, but given the party's (notionally) Social Democratic™ credentials, I thought it might be 'better' to use the traditional 'progressive' moniker!
I'm pretty sure that many politicians in the area are genuinely shocked, no doubt about it.
As to patently BS reactions, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, speaking in the Bundestag without knowing anything about the shooter, blamed AfD for the violence because 'words lead to deeds'.
Of course, if we would now point to the hatemongering w/respect to 'the unvaccinated' a few years ago, there's absolutely nothing to consider, right? Right.
He blamed AfD?? I really need to stop being surprised.
Unfortunately, we are probably going to go from one hatemongering campaign to another in the foreseeable future. It's more or less inevitable given that the pie is shrinking. This may eventually explode into armed conflict. I don't mean that this particular incident will trigger armed conflict (newsflash: Slovakia is not the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Fico is not Franz Ferdinand), but it is symptomatic of the rising temperature.
I expect the U.S. media to show how it feels about the “pro-Putin” Fico by largely ignoring this attack. I’d be surprised to such blatant victim-blaming as the example from Der Spiegel cited above, though who knows these days.
Rather than Franz Ferdinand, this is more akin to Trotsky and the ice pick.
Fico on his own had/have zero chance of effecting any change in any of the policies he criticises, Covid or others. He got whacked because he opposed in public something he had been told support; he broke ranks with the Party.
Or rather, USUK globalist totalitarian capitalism.
Makes me wonder if Olof Palme was killed in 1986 for opposing Sweden's pre-referendum adjustments to the EU and NATO.
I'm unsure about the Trotsky thing, you know; the (alleged) assailant is a 71 year-old left-progressive writer who, as legacy media reports consistently, 'disagreed with the politics' of Robert Fico.
I'd submit that the a good deal, if not most, 'international events' since 1945 are media hoaxes, from the Gulf of Tonkin Incident to the Gulf War to Covid.
I always find it useful to check the Mail online in these circumstances and currently we have top story King Charlie 111 meets slebs at garden party, so far so good. But what's this, further down Russia vs NATO WW111 doomsday scenario and a little bit further down more info on the shooting. Then article on the shooter, how fortunate that we have a picture of his ID card. He was a good boy and always kind to his mother (ok I made that bit up) but what's this he was also linked to Solvacki Branci, a pro Russian paramilitary group with known links to the Kremlin. Ah Ha.
Next op ed piece making link to WW1 and finally article telling us that Europe on the edge as 'pro-Putin Fico' shooting might be exploited by Russian President for presumably nefarious purposes.
You've got to admire the boys and girls at the Mail as this is as fine a piece of propaganda as you're ever likely to see and all within 24 hours of the shooting (ID card was nice touch). So there we have it, an irritant gets taken out as a warning to others, it was the Russians what done it guv and just in case you didn't get it an ex SAS legend (who no one's ever heard of) opines that we need a bigger army fast as the war in Ukraine spirals out of control.
Re the ID card: kinda reminds me of 9/11--steel-framed towers collapse at (near) free-fall speed (let's set aside WTC 7 here, shall we) of which virtually nothing but toxic dust remains. Somehow, police finds one or more mostly intact passports of the (alleged) perpetrators.
Re the WW1 comparison: oh, look, some other newspaper also thought of this 'analogue'…how…well, what exactly?
Call me a cynic (or anything else), but I do sense that this, too, reeks…well, fishy.
The fact that the shooter is 71 years old is the thing that still surprises me the most. Wasn't violence supposed to be a young male thing?? Well, at least he's male. Although there was, of course, this:
An obvious «patsy» if there ever was one. This guy is probably some failed nobody poet. He made a deal with someone. Either money for his family or some chance at having his crappy poetry promoted. Something to turn around his life failure. That’s attractive when you are that age and a failure to boot. So you never made it, what do you have to lose anyway?
Heads of state who openly oppose the NWO agenda have a strange habit of ending up dead, Magafuli and others can testament to that. This is no different and this is certainly no «old deranged guy acting totally alone» routine.
Most assassination attempts of public figures are engineered to serve the interests of the criminal cabal. This one is unlikely to be any different.
It looks suspiciously like that, eh?
Most probably. The mentally ill people get special "treatment" by psychiatrists, but nobody ever looks deep enough.
Well, look around--what, exactly, still qualifies as 'mental illness'?
Indeed.
That was my FIRST thought when I heard this. 'Another Franz Ferdinand, another patsy shooting. God help us!' F the media!
Edit: Well, good luck - Australia is not showing up this time!
We got lucky--for now.

BTW, I'm reasonably certain that "smer" means "direction," not "forwards."

Expect the unexpected, it would seem.
Also, Mr. Habeck is a serial offender in terms of nonsense-spouting.

I suspect that if some cheap political change can be had, US media will play it up.
As you say, who knows these days.
Also, Der Spiegel wasn't the only one that did this, but it was the most blatant perversion.
Rather than Franz Ferdinand, this is more akin to Trotsky and the ice pick.

Brilliant, couldn't have done it better myself.

Okay, at least no-one got hurt in that particular incident... But seriously, what is it with all these old people??
