I'm having trouble with my childish sense of humour reading "K.u.k". I know (from reading Svejk among other things) it's "kaiserliche und königsliche".
But "kuk" in swedish is one of our most common swear-words.
Anyways, that bit about rural is a thing often overlooked when people compare economical-political systems: the starting point.
Exactly, esp. as the decades around 1900 still inform most stereotypes. Unlike today, though, the differences between the West and the rest were growing.
Fascinating, the history snippets and postcards. And I have always enjoyed sending postcards and I still try to wherever I go. Saying that it’s becoming more difficult finding postcards to buy.
Also putting my tinfoil hat on for a moment it sure feels like they don’t want us to send mail (unless it’s buying crap online to kill off local shops) what with postage prices increasing by what seems every quarter.
Also ridiculously unreliable deliveries nowadays - Christmas cards sent to Sweden last year from the UK, most arrived within 3 weeks (3 weeks! Used to take 3 days), and one card took 3 months?!?
I always send my a card home to my family, esp as the children are so happy every time there is a card to pick up at the mailbox. No amount of messagging via phones or even video calls comes close.
As regards the failing postal services, well, I’m by now inclined to consider this by design.
I'm very old-fashioned and I sometimes still write LETTERS ~ remember those? Although youngsters laugh when I tell them that, they secretly love receiving them.
Another lost art-handwriting. Look at the beautiful script!
That, too. Another thing that’s no longer taught to children in school.

Same here.
