The judicial system lacks robust independence. Judges will not save us.

I concur; you know, it didn't use to be better in the past; people had some shame left--nowadays, there appears to be but greed, vanity, and hedonism.

And very many compromised personalities in leadership positions. Easily blackmailed into a desired position; they usually know what is expected of them and they deliver. Others, who slide by the selection processes, if "transgressing" are quickly punished for others to see. The whole system obeys blindly.

It also doesn't really require physical violence, or the threat thereof; social death being the way to go, it renders Wester-style totalitarianism way more palatable than, say, Stalinism or North Korea.

The end result is, of course, the same.

In other words, Judge Dettmar stands convicted of not obeying orders, despite said orders being unethical, factually wrong, and detrimental to innocents.

Irony just died, again.

You're of course correct. Judge Dettmar must be convicted because he chose his spine over his career. The world would be a much, much better place if there were more people like him, but, alas, that's not the world we live in.
