I spent a day hiking up and around Mt. Aso (first postcard), the only active volcano I’ve ever seen in person. It wasn’t as angry that day as it looks in the old photo, but it wasn’t fast asleep either, and when I was next to the crater and the wind changed to blow the fumes at me it was no joke.

Nice, I've sadly never been to Japan.
Speaking of volcanoes, I've once ventured atop Mt. Etna in Sicily: eery colours, bad smells--but what an experience.
