It’s a grain elevator, so to speak; look at the site: bulk goods (water transport has always been cheaper than overland) arriving by boat, they need to be offloaded.
I've visited 3 times, enjoyed it very much, seeing Sopot, just along coast, with the longest wooden pier in europe. The Amber jewellry is sold everywhere and is very beautiful.
What would they have offloaded into that tall building with the long hook?
Remarkably untouched by the war. And I wouldn’t have noticed the swastikas if you hadn’t mentioned it. Old cities seem impervious to time

I also think it was ‘well-kept’ after WW2.
It looked like a grain elevator to me but I wasn’t sure.
Transport by ship has always been the best way to move bulk goods. Those docks have seen it all. I love old movies with their dock scenes Lol
Thanks for sharing
Cheers!

Oh sounds even more intriguing now and thank you for your recommendation of a long weekend, I shall do some online searching and planning.
Remarkable “before and after” picture! And a most impressive cathedral I’ve not seen before, been added to the travel list.
A long weekend is ideal for sightseeing.
