Is there a word in German or English for "lyteskomik"?

It means "to laugh at retards/deformed" but with the added sense that it is a self-inflicted deformity or retardation, and that the one laughing feels slightly ashamed of himself, laughter being the only possible reaction in the face of the sheer (willful) retardation/disability on display.

It applies very much to Norwegian (and Swedish) media, especially the ones owned by Schibsted.

"This is the point I'm selling which must be True, so now I'll have to contrive of a way for it to become true, no matter what I have to adapt, adopt or adjust to make it so"

It's kind of the opposite of observing a phenomenon, looking for empirical facts and causal relations, and then drawing potential conclusions.

For the above in practice look f.e. for the idea that police /must/ be 50/50 men and women, thereby necessitating lowering the bar until 50/50 is achieved, no matter what it does to the police force as such.

Or masking, mass inoculations with faulty vaccines. Or dietary advice while also allowing oils, colouring agents, flavouring agents, preservatives, sweeteners, and so on in the food. Or being adamant about a tax on plastic grocery bags, while not bothering with all the plastic paint jars which could easily be recycled/re-used if only a system for it was set up. Or...

If there's a very real down-side to modern high-tech society, it is that it takes much longer for the stupidity to destroy it, than it would a more primitive one.

Oh, since we're talking German terms now, there's more than one (of course): on the one hand, if we're talking about someone doing something stupid out of his or her own will, the word you're looking for is 'fremdschämen', which translates literally into 'being/feeling ashamed for someone else' (most politicos™ and journos™ fall into that trigger category).

If we're talking retards, though, no such term is currently in use as everybody knew (once upon a time), being retarded or suffering from a crippling injury is often not one's own fault. These people were laughed at/with when they, say, did something silly but you wouldn't engage in fremdschämen as being retarded/deformed wouldn't be their fault. One could use the term 'Dorftrottel' (literally the village's fool) for such a pour soul, but the laughter, if any, would be out of understanding condescension, as opposed to the kind of issue you refer to.

But since 'prenatal diagnostics', itself a thinly veiled euphemism for eugenics (change my mind), in combination with 'the welfare state' (which commits the surviving handicapped people to institutions) has all but eliminated their numbers in everyday life, these terms have rapidly fallen out of use (plus they are, of course, associated with reprimands and stern looks from those who love to virtue-signal their way in and out of any discussion). People don't see handicapped people that often, hence it's a kind of 'out of sight, out of mind' issue (plus in Germany and Austria after 1918/45, there were many war veterans with disabilities whom you'd also see: our very own, so to speak, and they would constitute a different category for their 'defect' would come with the additional frown as their 'cause' was declared utterly reprehensible after the wars).

As to your last sentence: 'If there's a very real down-side to modern high-tech society, it is that it takes much longer for the stupidity to destroy it, than it would a more primitive one.'

I think it speaks to both the stunning resilience of modern society as well as to a simple fact you allude to: no primitive group could afford to be that stupid, and even some 'mediaeval' social formations would fail rather quickly if a bunch of morons would be put in charge…

Question is—do these people believe the BS they’re spouting?

I tend to answer in the affirmative, but this nonsense is so far beyond, it’s hard to say…
